〇 Reishi to enhance blood-brain barrier functions

Nippon Menard Cosmetic Co., Ltd. has focused on the blood-brain barrier and conducted research on crude drugs that can enhance brain functions.

Finally, researchers found that reishi essence extracted with a unique technique called subcritical water extraction method had an effect to boost blood- brain barrier functions.

It was also confirmed that 3-month administration of food containing the reishi essence improved calculation skill, by Kraepelin tests conducted before and after the administration.

The words ‘blood brain barrier’ may sound like a simple barrier situated in the entrance of the brain, but it’s not. Actually, its function is extremely complex.

Composed of vascular endothelial cells, the barrier communicates with peripheral cells and let certain substances pass through while blocking the others.

Blood brain barrier’s abnormality is potentially related to various disorders such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

KOUKA is a processed food of Ganoderma lucidum.

The ingredients are edible linseed oil, extract essence from Ganoderma lucidum, beer yeast (containing selenium), mackerel peptide DHA, EPA, bracket fungus carbon powder, dextrin (an encapsulant), gelatin, glycerin, glycerol ester of fatty acid, and pullulan.

KOUKA is designed to deliver reishi essence and other substances that positively effect on cognitive functions to the brain through the blood-brain barrier.

〇 Latest news on dementia and its prevention

Here’s global information on dementia and its prevention.

– Could leak in blood-brain barrier be cause of poor memory?
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/03/210318142530.htm

Have you forgotten where you laid your keys? Ever wondered where you had parked your car? Or having trouble remembering the name of the new neighbor? Unfortunately, these things seem to get worse as one gets older. A big question for researchers is where does benign forgetfulness end and true disease begin?

– New insight into protein production in brain could help tackle dementia
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/05/210519120736.htm

A pioneering new study led by UCL scientists has revealed, for the first time, a layer of genetic material involved in controlling the production of tau; a protein which plays a critical role in serious degenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

– Alzheimer’s: Blood oxygen levels could explain why memory loss is an early symptom
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/05/210528114028.htm

In a world first, scientists from the University of Sussex have recorded blood oxygen levels in the hippocampus and provided experimental proof for why the area, commonly referred to as ‘the brain’s memory centre’, is vulnerable to damage and degeneration, a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease.

〇 100 things by Dr. Hasegawa, the developer of HDS-R

At home and abroad, Dr. Kazuo Hasegawa, now 92, has enormously contributed to establishment of the groundwork for diagnosis of dementia.
In 2017, at the age of 88, he disclosed his disease.
After spending many years studying dementia, Dr. Hasegawa himself finally developed the disease.
He decided to make it public, because he wanted to let people know that anybody can have dementia.
And also, he wanted to make society more open to the disease.
Hoping to make it easier for those living with dementia to talk about the disease openly, he published a book titled I’m Enjoying my Spiritual Life with Dementia.

In the book Dr. Hasegawa shares 100 things he found.

21. Within a few years after developing Alzheimer’s, the weight of the brain decreases rapidly.
Dementia occurs when you become unable to cope with this deterioration.

22. Alzheimer’s is hard to be cured completely, but there are medicines to delay its progression.

23. I developed ‘dementia in twilight years’, which occurs after the age of 80.
This type of dementia will become much more popular in the future.

24. Even a healthy, under 65 person can develop dementia. That means no one can be free from it.

25. Even after the onset, good living environment can make some people change dramatically and seem as if they don’t have dementia.

26. Life without excitement is said to boost progression of dementia.

27. Having a habit of using the brain is known to be good for dementia prevention. In my case, the best way is ‘writing.’

28. You don’t need to be afraid when you lose an entire memory of something. Somebody around you remembers it.

29. Aging is living, and living is aging. Life is about ‘uniqueness’, ’unrepeatableness’ and ’progression without the end.’

30. Living longer is not easy. Becoming unable to walk, losing teeth, I have so much inconvenience.
But I hold up patiently to change something, firing up myself to keep me alive.
This is how I think we should live well longer.
