COVID-19 has forced many hospitals and nursing homes to prohibit visitors from seeing inmates not only in Japan but also in the United States and other countries.
Most inmates living with dementia might be confused or feeling so sad. How are care workers or family members dealing with this critical situation?
Here’s an example in Japan, with a man whose wife is admitted to a hospital.
Due to visiting restriction, all he can do is coming to the hospital once a week to hand over new clothes to a staff.
One day, however, he had a chance to see his wife without entering the hospital, thanks to a caregiver who took her in a wheelchair to the entrance.
It was only a few minutes, but enough to know how she is doing by seeing her face.
He appreciates the caregiver a lot for the thoughtful behavior.
You must feel it much longer when you can’t see your loved one for a month.
You must suffer anxiety escalating inside.
However, just one glance at your loved one’s face can make you know what’s going on and bring you relief.
A little something by a caregiver will surely comfort a patient’s family.
Likewise, another caregiver in a nursing home proposed a videophone service, which is already started.
Although the videophone is inaccessible from outside for security reason, family members are allowed to visit the facility’s front desk by making a reservation to use the phone to have conversations through the screen.
This kind of service is also offered in the United States. It is such wonderful work to find and deliver creative solutions powered by new technology.

〇 New entrants from outside the industry to raise ventilator production , supported by FDA
Following the spread of COVID-19, demands for ventilators, one of the most crucial equipment to treat severe patients, has shot up.
On March 25, Asahi Kasei announced that its subsidiary ZOLL Medical would increase the monthly ventilator production to 10 thousand, which is equivalent to 25 times of current amount.
From outside the industry, some automobile manufacturers are beginning to give support, such as General Motors that announced to supply the necessary parts to Ventec Life Systems on March 20.
Ford Motor Company also made an announcement to cooperate with another ventilator manufacturer GE Healthcare on March 24.
They suggested the possibility to produce simplified ventilators also at their own factories.
In addition, Ford will start manufacturing powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) under the cooperation with 3M.
PAPR is a full-face mask with an electric powered fan to supply cleaned air to a user.
It is expected to be used by medical workers who have contact with infected people.
Ford will produce the masks in their factories in Michigan, using cooling fans, filters, batteries and other car parts. They also plans to manufacture 0.1 million or more plastic face shields every week aided by 3D printer technique.
Under the shortage of the machines, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a guidance for deregulation on manufacture of ventilator related products on March 22, which allowed companies to switch their manufacturing components or adding new production lines flexibly.
This is why automobile companies can convert their lines to a different use.
Usually, production method or manufactured parts for authorized medical equipment can changed only with a certain procedure that takes much time.
In addition to this deregulation, the guidance presents a suggestion to remodel equipment for sleep apnea syndrome to ventilators.
