DISAJP NEWS Vol. 77 August 4th, 2024
Dementia Improved Support Association of Japan
Recent global temperature rise has produced the words “climate crisis.”
According to EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the world’s monthly average temperature has hit record high in recent 13 consecutive months in this June.
On July 22, the world’s average temperature marked its new record high.
On 25th, UNSG Antonio Guterres referred to record braking extreme heat around the globe, warning the world will get even hotter, causing critical situation.
Every year, approximately 0.5 million people are estimated to die due to heat waves.
2.4 billion people, more than 70% of the world’s working population, are at high risk from extreme heat.
For people with dementia, heat can be a responsible factor for symptom progression.
Rapid changes in the environment and excessive stress increase the risk.
The heat also causes a concern about dehydration, which can increase blood viscosity too much.
It can impair blood flow to cause dysfunctions in the brain or heart, in addition to dementia.
The heat in this summer demonstrates how the world is facing the climate crisis.
Undauntedly, our chairman Prof. Masao Mori doesn’t stop confronting the problems.

Every day Prof. Mori thinks about what people might need in the project.
We have started to develop the green juice that we mentioned at the last issue.
This month’s presentation includes:
– How to manage caregivers and what to do for residents’ diet
– Frozen meals developed by a French restaurant in Kobe
– Prevention of periodontal disease that can cause dementia
Test production of the green juice that can relieve constipation and anemia, which are very common in elderly people, is now under way.
Prof. Mori is always working on something that would benefit residents’ life.

〇 What is Alzheimer’s drug?—Video message from Prof. Masao Mori
On July 3, 2024, US FDA approved Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s drug Donanemab, as the second case after Biogen and Eisai’s Lecanemab.
Prof. Mori dares to say these are not dementia drugs.
They are only “unhappy drugs” that prolong the duration of dementia, without curing symptom or cognitive dysfunctions.
Prof. Mori also stresses that removing beta amyloid, which is considered to be responsible for the disease, is not the fundamental solution and improvement of cognitive functions can’t be achieved without taking care of depression along with dementia.
Lecanemab, which was approved in Japan on September 25 last year, is now used in the United States, China, Hong Kong, Israel, and South Korea.
On July 26 this year, however, European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended not granting marketing authorization for the drug.
EMA announced that the effect of slowing cognitive decline is not worth the risk of serious side effects such as brain swelling.
EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) concluded that Lecanemab’s confirmed efficacy to reduce clinical decline by 27% doesn’t offset the risk for side effects including brain swelling.
We hope you all get informed about what our chairman Prof. Mori thinks on dementia drugs.

〇 Prof Mori’s wellness tips
- Prevention of stiff shoulders
- How to get rid of virus-carrying mosquitoes
Here’s an episode from a wellness tips series by Prof. Mori, a microcirculation /physiology researcher and cultivator of reishi.
This is a review of the previous two articles, “Detoxification is curing constipation.”

This month, Prof, Mori shares a simple daily exercise that eases your stiff shoulders.
All you have to do is to swing your arms around, sitting on a chair or standing on the floor.
Swing your arms around with your palms outside and inside, each for 9 times.
Try it if you have stiff shoulders.

Another thing is an easy way to get rid of mosquitoes.
Despite his advanced age, Prof. Mori’s creativity never dries up and produces fresh ideas that no one else has thought of.
This time, he shares a unique way to kill mosquitoes that he invented in his own experience to deal with risks for infections that are threatening the world.
Due to global warming, various diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever, Zika virus infection, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile fever, yellow fever, and malaria began to be reported in the Western Hemisphere including Europe and the United States in the mid-1990s.
Japan will not be free from these risks forever.
Surprisingly, Prof. Mori came up with an easy way to kill mosquitoes using something you can get at a 100 yen shop.
His sharp snap will also surprise you.

〇 Reishi and I—Video message from Prof. Masao Mori
In this month’ interview, Prof. Mori talks about how he happened to encounter Reishi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNCDei3etVg
(Turn subtitles on to view English subtitles.)
Prof. Mori found reishi when he was trying to make money by raising cattle with his friends from university in Tsumagoi, where he has been growing the mushroom now.
He happened to find how to cultivate reish, the highest ranked mushroom, when he was reading a Chinese book titled Medicinal Fungi to know how to inoculate fungi into rice straws to make them turn into fodder for his cattle.
Prof. Mori contacted the Mycological Society of Japan and got the fungi, and started to grow the mushroom soon.
In those days Prof. Mori and his friends were so poor that they couldn’t even afford to eat, so they decided to take a chance to make a living by growing and selling the mushroom.
They successfully harvested beautiful mushrooms that can be rarely found in Japan
However, the Chinese medicine shop that they visited didn’t welcome them, because the herbalists in those days believed Reishi in a rugged, rock-like shape exposed to the rain and wind were likely to have more beneficial effects.
The shopkeeper used to be Prof. Mori’s senior during university.
Seeing his juniors putting the mushrooms back in their bags in disappointment, he said he would buy them all for 100 thousand yen.
The young men were overjoyed to hear that, and they all celebrated with curry and rice with coca cola at a restaurant in Ueno right after the deal, which Prof. Mori says was the most wonderful meal in his life.
Later on, they considered whether someone should go to medical school to do more research on Reishi.
Finally, Prof. Mori moved to China to conduct research at China’s top-ranked Fudan University , then Shanghai Medical University First Medical College.
He had a chance to see then president Dr. Yao Yang, who also served as one of 13 directors of the physiological society of Karolinska Institutet, which was in charge of selection of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Prof. Mori learned physiology from President Dr. Yang, conducting scientific research on Reishi with the vice president and pathologist Prof. Zhu Shinan, studying microcirculation from Prof. Kin Fuimin, who had returned from studying abroad in the United States.
Their researches successfully showed that Reishi are very effective in improving microcirculation, increasing microcirculatory blood perfusion, and are useful in controlling and treating hypertension, high viscosity, and hyperglycemia.
More specifically, they found that the mushroom has effects to promote nitric oxide and nitric oxide synthase activities, as well as normal vascular endothelial cell proliferation, which lead to regeneration of micrfocirculation.
These studies were summarized in Reishi I, which is held in Japan’s National Diet Library.
In the video, Prof. Mori looks back on his good old days with a gleam in his eye.
We hope you all enjoy the video.
