〇 World COVID-19 infection exceeded 18 million
According to Johns Hopkins University, world COVID-19 infection and death toll reached 18,282,208 and 693,694 respectively, as of 2 pm on August 4 in Japan time.
The US has the greatest number of infection amounting to 4,713,540 followed by 2,750,318 in Brazil, 1,855,745 in India, 854,641 in Russia and 516,862 in South Africa.
As for the death toll, again the US has the largest number of 155,402, followed by 94,665 in Brazil, 48,012 in Mexico, 46,210 in the UK and 38,938 in India.
To deal with the explosion of infection, Hong Kong authority has tightened restriction on the gathering in public space.
Now it allows only two people to gather, wearing masks and keeping social distance.
On July 29, the authority prohibited all the food service provided in restaurants or food courts, as well as making it mandatory to wear a mask in public outdoor space.
As we mentioned on last issue, severe patients has characteristics as below:
– Male
– Smoker
– Having lifestyle disease such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia etc.
– Overweight
– Having malignancy
Smoking, overweight or a lifestyle disease weakens vessel functions. Generally, male is considered to have higher risk for damaged vessels than female. Thus, those with higher risk for vessels are likely to become severe patients.

〇 Report on a lecture by Dr. Hiroshi Hasegawa, a son of the developer of HDS-R Kazuo Hasegawa
Dr. Kazuo Hasegawa, who has contributed to groundwork for dementia diagnosis, is now one of those living with dementia. Recently, his son Dr. Hiroshi Hasegawa gave a lecture on the disease and his father, where our advisor Prof. Masao Mori joined and had lively exchange of views.
Dr. Hasegawa said risk factors for dementia includes hypertension, diabetes, smoking etc. but they can be alleviated, while stressing the importance of social interaction as a relieving factor.
He also mentioned morbidity by age as 2.1 (1.1) % in 65-69 male (female); 4.0 (3.3) % in 70-74 male (female); 7.2 (7.0) % in 75-79 male (female); 12.9 (15.6) % in 80-84 male (female); and 22.2 (29.8) % in over 85 male (female).
As you can see, the number increases rapidly from 75. In japan, current average life expectancy is 81.25 in male and 87.32 in female, which rose considerably from 50.06 and 53.96 in 1947, when most died well before developing dementia.
You can say longer life made more patients.
On the other hand, as for Parkinson’s disease, an increasing number of patients experience the onset after reaching their 50s.
One cause is lack of dopamine, which also triggers depression or cognitive dysfunction, so it requires delicate diagnosis based on good observation.
