〇 Relationship between sleep disturbance and progress of dementia

A month has passed since 2019 started. We hope you had good feeling for the future in the very beginning of the year.

We will appreciate your voice and opinions.

Mentally stimulating activity was revealed to decrease the risk for cognitive function’s decline caused by aging.

Relationship between sleep disturbance and progress of dementia

The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, United States) conducted 4 year’s research for more than 1,900 people who had normal cognitive function (average age of 77 at the beginning of the study).

Although 450 people developed mild cognitive impairment within the period, performing certain activities regularly was revealed to reduce the risk for memory or thinking disorder as below:

·30% lower risk by using computers

·28% lower risk by handicraft

·23% lower risk by social activities

·22% lower risk by playing games

Performing those activities once or twice a week is appeared to be much better training for brain compared to only 2 or 3 times a month.
Finding problems and searching solutions bring various levels of mental stimulations.
In any activities, enjoying the process is important.

It is also effective to have adequate sleep to prevent dementia.

Aging can cause changes of sleeping habits a lot and some of elderly people become unable to have good sleep.
“Fragmentation” of sleep in aged people has impact on their health and is related to many disorders including depression and dementia.

Sleeping disturbance and progress of dementia are known to have bidirectional relationship, which means dementia patients are likely to develop sleeping disorder, while poor sleep accelerate decline of memory and other cognitive functions.

A study shows amyloid beta protein accumulated in brain, known to cause dementia, can be removed by deep sleep. Avoiding a negative spiral where dementia and poor sleep boost each other leads to preventing or ameliorating dementia.
